Sawyer stepped back and slid her fingers together to keep them from trembling, her eyes looking down at her feet. She stepped back after a moment and bit her lip, not saying anything as she turned and made her way back to the guest room. The fact he didn’t kiss her back or even mirror her sentiment in the slightest of ways hurt even more than anything he had said earlier that day. She couldn’t help but feel like either they’d just broken up, or he really had given up on them. As soon as that thought occurred to her, she turned around to look at him. “I’m not … giving up on us,” Sawyer told him, wringing her hands. “Or you. I just … need you to know that.”
He looked back up when she turned back, staying quiet until she was done speaking and then hesitating even more. “I do love you, Sawyer,” he said quietly. “I do.”
