Sawyer dropped her eyes as well and nodded slowly, swallowing hard. “T-That’s okay,” she said quietly. “I wouldn’t be okay with it either,” she said honestly, keeping her gaze down at their hands. “I think it’s completely fair,” she added after a beat. “What I did was unacceptable and wrong of me and incredibly selfish, and I understand, Ry. I do.” Her eyes stung and she closed her eyes and willed the tears away.
He immediately felt guilty when he saw her expression, but he knew it was something he couldn’t change. He felt how he felt about it, and ignoring that was just going to make everything go from bad to worse. “I’m sorry,” he said, keeping his gaze even. He’d known it would upset her, but he was sorry it had. And he was going to continue to be. “And I don’t know,” he continued slowly, “if I can trust you. I know you say I can,” he said quickly, heading off her reassurance, “but I don’t feel it.”
