Sawyer closed and locked the door behind him, her smile fading when he didn’t smile, though the ghost of it was still there, in hopes it would reassure him in ways she wasn’t sure she could verbally express, at least not right now. “I’m okay,” she said softly, stepping towards him. She paused a beat and then leaned up, wrapping her arms around him and hugging him.
He paused a moment when she hugged him, almost like he wasn’t going to return her embrace. Really, he was surprised—though why he was surprised he wasn’t sure. It wasn’t exactly unusual. A beat later his arms wound around her waist gently. And then a beat after that, his hug tightened ever so slightly, and he dropped his head to her shoulder.
