The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

“Whoa, what a sad life you lead,” she said with a laugh. “Maybe next year it’ll be nine fifty-five,” she nudged him gently, playfully. She was sure she’d seen him kicking around on Tumblr after that, and knew he was joking anyway.

She nodded and reached over to put her hand over both of his to give them a gentle squeeze. “Thanks,” she said quietly, “for … sharing that. Or … um, whatever,” she said, sounding a touch shy and maybe a little vulnerable. “I mean, I know I’m not alone, but sometimes it’s nice for the … support? Or the knowledge. I don’t know. I’ve been…” she withdrew her hand, “been really lucky. To have friends that are supportive of me in that way.”

“It’ll just get steadily earlier, I know,” he sighed, shaking his head dramatically. “Eventually it’ll be like four in the afternoon. And then I’ll die and it will be always and forever.”

He looked over at her when she reached for his hands, his expression blankly sombre for a long moment and then he let out a short, quiet, wry laugh. “Probably the only time I’m ever going to be thanked for telling someone that,” he said, maybe trying to get the mood to lighten a bit, if only to try and stop himself from getting too far steeped in his feelings for the time being.
