The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

“I hope so,” she said before she nudged him lightly. “When you were my age. You’re showing your age again, Ryan,” she teased with a soft laugh.

She sighed and nodded, making a bit of a face. “That’s really terrible,” she said sympathetically. “I … don’t really know what I’d do in that situation. I think … well, I think I’d have to really love the person to get back with them after that, or at least understand what made them do that in the first place. I feel like if they’d slept with my best friend just out of spite that … well, I couldn’t forgive them.”

He shrugged a little bit, grinning in spite of himself. “Can’t help it,” he replied. “You hit twenty and everything changes, I’m telling ya,” he joked. It hadn’t really been all that different, at least, not to him.

“Yeah,” he sighed shortly. “Talked to her, and… I know it wasn’t out of spite at least, but… I don’t know. Like I said, old crap.” He would be lying if he said it didn’t still matter to him, so he kept his mouth shut. She probably wouldn’t believe him anyway—that sort of thing always mattered, even when it was long forgiven and forgotten about.
