She laughed a little. “It’s actually subsiding. I mean, since I’ve been here for so long people are starting to lose interest in the new girl, which is nice,” she said with a smile. “I’m pretty good with just blending in from here on out. I know I’ve said that before.”
“It’s okay,” she said, watching him carefully. “Is there … well, something you want to talk about in regards to that?” she said after a beat. He sure sounded like he really knew what he was talking about, and she wondered if there was anything he needed to get into. “I mean, if you don’t, I just … thought you might need to talk to someone about something.”
“That does sound nice,” he nodded. He supposed that’s how his life had always been; flying under the radar simply because he’d always been on it. “I mean, when I was your age, I didn’t really pay attention to many people, and most of them kind of left me alone. You’ll get there.”
He glanced over at her for a moment and shrugged a shoulder. “No, I just… Old crap,” he sighed, grinning a bit and shaking his head. “It um… Last time I broke up with my girlfriend, she disappeared for a month or so, and… Came back and really wanted to get back together. And I didn’t want to, and she slept with one of my best friends. So I get it.”
