The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

“I’m glad I don’t either,” she agreed, looking over at him and tucking some hair back behind her ear with a soft laugh. “I think it’s nice getting to know people too,” she added, shrugging. “I like hearing people’s stories or… trading questions back and forth. It’s just when I get questioned relentlessly about my own life that I get uncomfortable. I like the general … learning about someone by spending time together or asking some questions, though.”

She sighed and nodded. “Yeah, I mean, I actually have a friend back home that’s all angry with me because I have a really close friend here. He feels like I’ve replaced him and he’s been all weird about it. It’s like … I mean, regardless I’d be close to this person here, but maybe he wouldn’t feel like I’ve replaced him if he would have put forth more effort to get a hold of me. I called him all the time, wrote to him, all of that and he just … didn’t. But he expected me to still feel the same way or keep it all up. It’s stupid,” she said.

“I get that,” he agreed, sighing a little bit. He didn’t mind being asked about his life as a general rule—it was when people went on and on that it felt like they were trying to pry information out of him. And that was something he never wanted to deal with. “Sometimes too, when it’s the same people pushing and pushing, it— You just don’t want to tell them anything.”

His brow furrowed a moment as he listened to her, but his expression cleared after a moment and he shook his head, a soft, wry laugh passing through his lips when she was done. “Sounds like an ex,” he remarked. He’d experienced that kind of ex, though maybe not in that situation. And he’d certainly been that ex. “A jealous one,” he added.
