“That’s true,” she laughed. “I really don’t know your life,” she said, making a face before she looked out onto the water. She didn’t believe it for a second, and she was sure he knew that.
She looked back over at him and smiled. “Yeah, I mean, I get it. It’s like there’s some people where it feels like they have every reason not to check in or … whatever, but with other people it’s like … you know they could easily come and see you or put forth the effort but they just don’t.”
“Actually,” he replied after a moment of though, “I’m kind of glad you don’t,” he told her. “I mean, it’s nice… getting to know someone, instead of just knowing them by default,” he said, shaking his head. He hoped she wouldn’t take that to mean that she was a new shiny novelty item; there were a lot of reasons he was genuinely pleased that she didn’t know him. She didn’t have anything to judge him by, or against.
He gave a rather quick nod, enthusiastically agreeing with that bit. “Tell me about it,” he drawled, rolling his eyes. “And then they want you to be the best friend in the world and you just… Can’t,” he finished after a beat, relaxing his shoulders forward again and resting his arms on his lap. Between his legs his hands were shaking slightly, not unlike they would had he drunk too much coffee too quickly, and barely enough to be noticeable.
