The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

“Yeah, fair. I mean, I’m always motivated to be a good kid because… well, I want to be, and because I know that my parents would be disappointed and I’d get punished if I wasn’t,” she shrugged. “So yeah, it’s just easier. Makes life less complicated and messy. I totally understand,” she smiled.

She sighed. “Yeah. I mean, sometimes it’s hard for me to put it into words or … well, if I don’t want to hurt someone else, or make them worried … but in general, if it’s a ‘I need time alone’ or … anything of that sort, I’m good with that. It’s the … ‘I care about you so much I don’t want to hurt you’ that can be tricky.”

“And that,” he nodded, “is why you’re going to do well in life,” he said with a bit of a chuckle. It was the kids that felt entitled, the ones that treated other people badly, that wouldn’t get very far. Even Ryan, with all of his flaws, and all of his attitude problems, could be a nice guy most of the time. Some people just baffled him, the way they acted.

“I…” he paused a moment. “I’m not even really so good with the ‘I need time alone’ bit,” he said with a bit of a laugh. “Maybe it’s because I’m not… sure I want to be left alone. I don’t know.” He was starting to think he’d never be able to figure out what he was feeling about things. Everything was starting to conflict in ways he just couldn’t reconcile.
