The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

Her grin settled into a gentle smile. “I guess that’s true,” she agreed, “though it’s also more work for them if they have to teach the same student twice,” she joked with a soft laugh. She was sure none of her grades were that bad, but the statement still stood anyway.

She reached instinctively for his arm and then paused and let out a little laugh, dropping her hands back to her lap. “You don’t have to,” she told him, shaking her head. “I just … didn’t want you to be talking to me if you’d rather be playing or something. I didn’t want you to feel like you had to talk to me just because I was here,” she clarified. “I like having the break. I’ve been working for awhile.”

He laughed a bit. “That’s true,” he agreed. “I’m sure some of them just wanted me gone.” To be fair, of the teachers he’d had twice, he was pretty glad to be getting away from them. About as glad as he was sure they were to be seeing the back of him.

He paused, having not gotten up yet, and settled back down onto the bench. He waited until she’d stopped speaking and then nodded. “Yeah, okay,” he replied. “I’m just… I guess I’m used to that sort of thing meaning something like, ‘Ryan, get out of my face’,” he said with an uneasy chuckle.
