The Space in Between || Ryan & Alain

alainbrowne:

It was a beautiful day outside, and thus studying inside in the confines of her room seemed ridiculous to Alain. Though really, she had always enjoyed studying outside, or at least somewhere other than her house. There were definitely less distractions, and she was glad that her chosen destination today, the river court, was nice and quiet.

With that said, any activity going on wouldn’t have done much to distract her — she was used to spending time around basketball players, so the sound of the basketball and the swoosh of the hoop wouldn’t have been enough to put her off studying entirely. The company, maybe, but not the game itself.

She looked up from her book, sighing and looking up at the sky, stifling a yawn and tucking some of her hair back behind her ears, blinking a few times. Sometimes when she read for too long, her eyes started to feel strange and it was nice to look away for a little while. She shifted on the bleachers, stretching her legs out in front of her and lazily looked around, taking in the water, the hoop … she paused when she caught sight of a familiar figure, and she smiled, albeit perhaps a touch hesitantly, and raised her hand to wave at him.

She was worried that maybe she’d come across pushy or too concerned, and she hoped she hadn’t put him off her.

He saw her hand raise in a wave as he approached and shifted to hold the ball under his right arm so he could raise his left in a greeting gesture as well. He had no idea what he was walking into, but he somehow knew it would likely be an okay situation. “This court taken?” he asked, once he was close enough she could reasonably hear him, managing a bit of a smile of his own.

He couldn’t help but wonder what she’d be doing out here on her own, on this kind of day. There were better places to go and collect your thoughts—well, for everyone who didn’t play basketball, anyway.

He supposed it was a nice enough day to come down here just to be near the river, anyway. Sometimes that’s what he would do anyway; he’d make the walk down here and by the time he’d reached the court, his desire to play had dissipated, and he could just sit down and enjoy the quiet. It was a pretty peaceful place, on good days.
