Things with Owen had gotten slightly better, if only because he tended not to think about it. It was easy when the hospital seemed busier than ever, as more people were out and about and consequently getting into accidents and the like. It wasn’t something that Owen was thrilled about, as he never liked to see people hurt or in pain, but it did help him not to think of the life that he had seen slip away not too long ago.
He was just finishing up the shift, having worked a particularly grueling one with three different operations all scheduled early on in the day with consultations through the afternoon, and he was more than ready to go home and crash. He stifled a yawn, carrying his bag of belongings as he made his way out of the employee changing quarters and out into the hall.
He was trying to recall which car park he had drove into that morning, as five AM had came ridiculously early when he hadn’t been able to fall asleep until after one. Netflix and a stupid fucking show about some stupid fucking kid and his friends set in a stupid fucking town in Massachusetts had something to do with it. Him feeling as though he could have done something more for the child was the other contributing factor.
It was because of this that Owen had asked one of his colleagues to prescribe him with something to help him sleep, or at least something to relax. He’d been having a hell of a time recently, and as he’d seen his colleague before as a doctor, he knew that he would know just what he needed, or rather, could handle.
He was stupidly dreaming of taking one of those pills and finally getting a good chunk of sleep when he went down a hall and noticed a familiar figure out of the corner of his eye. He paused and backtracked, turning and walking towards his little brother. “Ryan? What’s up?” he asked, confused and a bit concerned, though he didn’t let the latter show on his face.
He didn’t know why one of his first impulses was to worry about his little brother, but when you work in a hospital and you see your brother in said hospital, he imagined it wasn’t too strange.
He paused again at an intersection in the hallway, double-checking the signs on the walls to determine he was still on course, and turned down in the direction the arrow was pointing for the pharmacy. He figured he was getting pretty close, and when he heard his name being called from somewhere behind him, he could see the sign at the end of the hall indicating he’d found his destination. Nevertheless, when he heard his name he stopped, silently cursing before turning around.
Ryan really shouldn’t have been surprised to run into his brother. Not here, at his place of work, at this time of day. And somehow—somehow—he was still surprised that he had. “Hey,” he replied, not letting his surprise manifest in his expression or his tone. “Um… Looking for you,” he lied easily, shrugging his shoulders and sliding his hands into the pockets of his sweater. “You coming or going?”
